How to build a capsule wardrobe for your family
A capsule wardrobe is a small, intentional collection of clothing — usually 30 to 40 pieces — that mix and match into dozens of outfits. It saves space, money, and morning decisions. Here's how to build one for yourself and your kids.
1. Start with what you own
Before buying anything new, catalogue every piece you already wear. Open Kidrobe, snap a photo of each outfit, and tag it by category. You'll quickly see which pieces get the most wear — those are the foundation of your capsule.
2. Pick a colour palette
Choose 2–3 neutrals (black, white, beige, navy) and 1–2 accent colours. Every piece in the capsule should pair with at least three others. A minimalist wardrobe leans on neutrals so any top works with any bottom.
3. Build around versatile basics
For each person, aim for: 5 tops, 3 bottoms, 2 layering pieces (hoodie, cardigan), 1 dress or jumpsuit, 2 pairs of shoes, and weather-specific extras. For kids, double the bottoms — they get worn out faster.
4. Track wears in Kidrobe
Log each outfit when it's worn. After a month you'll see the “Least Worn” rail — those pieces don't earn their spot. Donate them, then refill with something more useful.
5. Refresh seasonally
Twice a year, review the wardrobe in Kidrobe. Mark outgrown pieces, log donations, and add new essentials. The capsule stays small even as kids grow.
